World Lakes ~ On the Rocks 



This first research and presentation project we will be doing is a study of World Lakes in conjunction with Mr. Moreno's Art Class - Students will prepare a report due right before Fall Break.  All details are listed, and/or will be as the project unfolds - all items have been reviewed in class - project is due next week.

This blog is live and can be referenced as needed.  Students will prepare a three dimensional art representation of their selected plant/flower have been created in Art Class with Mr. Moreno.

Objective: Define the term lake and understand how lakes differ from other bodies of water.  Understand the temperatures, culture, the area - what's happening around it - is the lake used?  For what?   Many topics to talk about and use towards your paper.  Let us know about the symbiotic relationship between your plant and lake.  The majority of research has been conducted in our classroom - to include Ted Ed presentations.

Keep a Research Folder  - Keep track of your research sites - for bibliography - need to be able to reference - 
I need to Pick a Lake ....   What is my Lake?
What plant is in the area?  Is it indigenous?   What the heck is indigenous?  well?  Go to the dictionary ... 
um, and/or go to www.dictionary.com - 

Why do you think lakes are important to people, especially the lakes they have learned about.  Why do people choose to live on and near lakes?  What kinds of resources do lakes provide for people?  

This is a five to seven paragraph report - it will be a cumulative report and your  flower creation must be included - so you must choose a lake that covers your creation.    This process has been completed in class on August 30th - students will have class time and out of class time to complete - time will need to be allocated accordingly. 

Gather, Research - Keep notes, Rough Draft due - October 10th, Your final report due; October 12th and to be posted by Thursday, October 14th.  A Ted Ed Lesson to be created and a Tri-Fold board that will hold any pictures or drawings and final report - this can be turned in as completed - but no later than Thursday, October 14th - 

* Ted Ed Lessons are due on Monday - October 10th - Ted Ed presentations will begin on that day - www.teded.com -
all parts - as demonstrated in class to include 5 multiple questions with PLAUSIBLE answers ... 

* Rough Draft for report is due October 10th - All information and research to be completed - 

Put together final report with tri-fold board - *Final Report and Tri-Fold are Due by Thursday, October 14th -

Reports - will have a title page;  Lake/Plant/Flower and Name - Pictures/Optional

Report as discussed - with final paragraph telling us why you chose your lake and flower - what drew you to them - did you like what you learned?  Was it as expected?  How did you like creating a Ted Ed Lesson. 

Final Page - Bibliography page - as referenced in class and on worksheet - Reports to be attached to your Tri-Fold - all pieces included.

  19. The Rose and Salt Lake

    The rose is a beautiful and well known plant. There are over 100 species of roses. The oldest rosebush lived for over 1000 years. You can find the rose growing in Honolulu, Oahu near Salt Lake. Salt Lake is a lake made of salt, and since it is really a crater it's not connected to the ocean.

    The rose goes back 35 million years. It comes in a variety of colors. There are pink, red, yellow, white and even purple roses. Each color has a special meaning. As a symbol, the rose represents fragrance, kindness and even love. Salt Lake is where the rose was originally found.

    Salt Lake is surrounded by supermarkets and apartments. The lake is not really salt, but it did get all of its able to be eaten salt.

    Salt Lake is the highlight of Oahu.

    Georgia, Iowa, New York and North Dakota have chosen the rose as their official state flower. In fact, the United States has had the rose as their official country flower since 1986.

    The original name for the Rose is Rosa.

  20. This plant looks like red zip ties tied around a stick, what is it? This plant is the Snow Plant and it is mainly located in Lake Tahoe, but is located throughout California, Washington, and Nevada. You can cook the stalks of a snow plant but it has to be cooked like asparagus. The snow plant’s scientific name is sarcodes. The kingdom of the snow plant is plantac. Its family is ericaceae. The snow plant has to grow in the shade to survive.

    Lake Tahoe is 2/3 in California and 1/3 in Nevada. Lake Tahoe has 72 miles of shore line. The water in Lake Tahoe is 99.994% pure. Lake Tahoe is the 2nd deepest lake in the United States. It is the largest alpine lake in North America.

    Lake Tahoe is a freshwater lake. Its latitude and longitude are 39.0968° N, 120.0324° W. Lake Tahoe has 4 kinds of trout. Those trout are, they are Lahortan cutthroat trout, Lake Trout, Brown Trout, and Rainbow Trout. Brown Trout is a European species.

    Lake Tahoe has 147 trillion liters of water in it. Did you know Lake Tahoe has enough water for everyone in the U.S to have 50 gallons of water to have every day for the next 5 years? Lake Tahoe is over 2 million years old making it one of the oldest lakes in the world. Lake Tahoe has 270 days in a year that is sunny or partly sunny. 1974’s “Godfather II” was filmed in Lake Tahoe. Part of the 1960’s winter Olympics were in Lake Tahoe.

    I chose the snow plant because I really liked the color and what it looked like. It looks like red zip ties tied around a stick. I chose Lake Tahoe because the water is really clear. It looks like drinking water with blue food coloring. This is my lake what is yours?

    Did you know that Lake Erie needs Orchids and Orchids need Lake Erie? First of all we can start with Orchids. Orchids can be used to make vanilla. Their size depends on the species. Orchids can even weigh a couple hundred pounds. They are also found underground.

    Lake Erie needs the nutrients from Orchids. Orchids produce natural nutrient that they share with Lake Erie. Lake Erie needs the nutrients so that the fish can survive. Without Orchids Lake Erie would have no living animals in it. Remember flowers are important.

    Did you know that Lake Erie is located in Michigan, New York, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. Lake Erie's river basin is Saint Lawrence. Lake Erie is about 10,000 - 99,999 years old. The surface area of this lake is 25,700 miles. Lake Erie is a fresh water lake.

    Lake Erie gets along very well with Orchids. They both are very natural. They have a different kind of direct correlation. A direct correlation is a special connection between something or someone. I chose Lake Erie, and Orchids because I like Orchids and they grow by Lake Erie.

    Today I am going to take you into an adventure of daisies. I think that daisies are well,I should actually tell you at the end. The daisy comes in different colors like blue,red,yellow,pink,peach,light purple,orange,and white. The daisy is near a community lake. The name of that lake is Lake Greeson.


    Sadly the daisy grows on a hideous type of plant called the...weed. You can decide either the daisy is a flower or weed. This might sound disgusting but you can eat daisies. This is pretty cool. A daisies pedals close at evening and open at dawn.


    Lake Greeson is a community lake. you can swim,bike,camp,and fish. Lake Greeson is is surrounded by 15 parks to. The length of LAKE Greeson is 18.81 miles. That is a long way. If you want to go to a little Missouri river go to Lake Greeson. The area of Lake Greeson is two miles.

    Lake Greeson is a very famous lake. Like people go fishing their all the time.Lake Greeson has it's own hotel. you can see all of the daisies to I think I saw a rainbow one(not really).

    So I choose a daisy because it reminds me of when I was little and always playing in the garden. I also choose a daisy because it is a very famous plant. The daisy stands for flourish( to be successful). The daisy has been a very big hit in school plays. So I have to skedaddle so bye.

  24. My kid isn't going to carve anything out of wood. So is this really the assignment? Can you send home the requirements please since obviously this requires parent involvement. What materials would you recommend?
